The St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber company was founded in 1888 by four experienced lumbermen from the Midwest, who purchased 80,000 acres of prime timberland from the Northern Pacific Railway and incorporated the business for $1.5 million.  By 1898, St. Paul & Tacoma Co. was one of the largest lumber producers in Washington. Historian Jesse Clark McAbee examines the company’s lasting effects on present-day Tacoma.
